Aspen Avionics’ Evolution backup display TSO’d

Aspen Avionics has received Technical Standard Order (TSO) approval of the Evolution Backup Display system. Now available for third party STC and OEM applications, the Evolution Backup Display is a fully digital, independent flight display system designed to replace mechanical backup instruments used in Part 23 EFIS installations.

The Evolution Backup Display goes beyond traditional mechanical or electronic backups by providing all of the capabilities expected of a primary, integrated, digital EFIS system, company officials said.

Capabilities include: attitude, altitude and airspeed tapes, slaved DG, rate of turn, slip/skid, VSI, and GPS flight plan overlay. Additional optional features include: horizontal situation indicator, lateral and vertical guidance indicators, autopilot coupling, GPS steering, and support for display of traffic, datalink weather, and Stormscope data.

In the event of primary EFIS failure or loss of ship power, the Evolution Backup Display  enhances safety and situational awareness over that provided by traditional steam or electronic backup gauges, according to company officials. All versions of the Evolution Backup Display come standard with a large capacity emergency power source that provides a minimum of two hours of continuous operation following loss of ship power.

“Pilots flying fully integrated glass panel systems can now complete the digital transformation of their panel. If the primary EFIS in the cockpit fails, transitioning to a glass backup display interface, rather than a mechanical instrument, will be much more intuitive and less stressful to the pilot in an emergency situation. In many applications, installation of an Evolution Backup Display would also permit continued autopilot coupling following a failure of the primary EFIS system,” says Brad Hayden, Aspen’s Vice President of Marketing.

The Evolution Backup Display is available in portrait or landscape orientations, with Basic and Advanced levels of functionality. The Basic backup product, which lists for $6,995, provides all of the primary flight instrumentation found in the traditional six-pack. The Advanced backup product, which lists for $10,995, adds an electronic HSI, autopilot coupling, dual RMI, lateral and vertical deviation indicators, GPSS, emergency GPS, and optional traffic, lightning and datalink weather interfaces. Future software releases will add options for synthetic vision and other features to the Evolution Backup product family.
