The Central Florida Indoor Free-flight Club, which promotes the building and flying of all sorts of indoor free-flight model airplanes, whether an original design for high performance competition or kit models for scale or sport, will hold its initial meeting this Saturday on the SUN ’n FUN campus at Lakeland-Linder Regional Airport.
“If you are interested in building and flying indoor free flight models, we highly encourage you to join our ranks and share the knowledge and help that club membership affords,” officials said. “Our members are always willing to help and give advice for the new “indoor free-flyer” or to you former flyers regaining the fun of your youth.
Free Flight modeling is the oldest form of aero-modeling and is still practiced all over the world. In Free Flight, once the model has been launched, the modeler has no control over it. All of the balance and trimming must have been done correctly beforehand. This is part of the intriguing challenge of Free Flight. ??Free Flight is an excellent hobby for those who enjoy designing and/or building mechanical things. It teaches patience and persistence. It teaches mathematics, science, and engineering, as well as shop skills.
Indoor models are very delicate and fly very slowly. Since they are not generally sturdy enough to be flown outdoors, they are usually flown in large gymnasiums.
Free Flight competition ranges from local club sponsored contests up to the World Championships. Each year the National Free Flight Society (NFFS) and the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), the governing body of Model Aviation in the United States, sponsors a National Championship competition. Every two years, Federation Aeronautique International (FAI) sponsors a Junior World Championship (those under 18 years of age) and an Open World Championship. Participation in the World Championship level is intense, similar to an Olympics, with more than thirty countries sending their respective teams.
The first organizational meeting of the Central Florida Indoor Free-flight Club will be May 19 at 9 a.m. at SUN ‘n FUN Fly-In, Inc, 4175 Medulla Road, Lakeland, FL. SUN ‘n FUN is located on the south side of the Lakeland Linder Airport and the event will be held in Hangar E on Rocky Road.
