The International Women’s Air & Space Museum (IWASM) is hosting its seventh annual Corks in the Concourse pre-airshow party on Friday, Aug. 31, the day before the Cleveland National Air Show kicks off.
This wine-tasting event is held among the museum’s exhibits honoring women in aviation and space history. All proceeds from Corks in the Concourse will go directly to support the museum, officials noted.
As part of the festivities at the Rocky Mountain Airshow, scheduled for Aug. 24-26 at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Broomfield, Colo., the 17-foot Stars and Stripes Rocket will launch at the show, courtesy of the United Launch Alliance (ULA) Intern Rocket Program.
Three pilots from North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), the U.S. and Canadian military organization charged with intercepting aircraft that violate TFRs, attended this year’s AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh to talk face-to-face with general aviation pilots on how to avoid TFRs and what to do if they’re intercepted. According to a report at AirTrafficManagement.net, general aviation aircraft make up the majority of more than 1,500 intercepts NORAD has made since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and the command is attempting to cut down that number through outreach and education programs.

Last week I wrote, “A suggestion for keeping the magic of AirVenture alive.” I’ve received a handful of emails thanking me for the post, some of which offered personal experiences. Sorry I missed you this year. I was keeping an eye out for you. I actually spent the show as as an observer this year with the family and spent very little time working the Penn Yan Aero booth.
The Rocky Mountain Airshow, set for Aug. 24-26, at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Broomfield, Colorado, promises to be bigger than ever this year with the addition of hot air balloons and the expansion of the kid-friendly Adventure Zone.
A fourth aerobatics act has been added to The Wings over Waukesha Air Show, as former US Air Force A-10 pilot Jim Leavelle will be performing in his T-6, along with Jim “Fang” Maroney Super Chipmunk aerobatics, Dave Dacy-Tony Kazian wingwalking, and Dr. Bill Blank Super Decathlon aerobatics.
The airshow, which will be held Aug. 25 and 26, at the Waukesha County Airport (UES) in Wisconsin, also will feature the Experimental Aircraft Association’s B-17 “Aluminum Overcast” bomber from World War II, which will offer rides and tours.
