New airport in the works

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Oak Ridge is heading toward its next step in getting a general aviation airport on the west end of town. According to a report at OakRidger.com, the City Council voted unanimously to support creation of the airport at the East Tennessee Technology Park. Target completion of the airport project will be 2018, depending on funding and other factors.

Sebring applies for grant to preserve historic control tower

The historic air traffic control tower at Sebring Regional Airport (SEF) in Florida is badly in need of renovation and the Sebring Airport Authority is asking the city, the county and prominent members of the public for letters of support in obtaining a state grant.

Traffic quadruples at DPA during NATO

Traffic at DuPage Airport (DPA) in Chicago quadrupled May 21 as a result of  Temporary Flight Restrictions over the city of Chicago during the NATO conference.

Officials at the general aviation facility said the of traffic “far exceeded” their expectations.

Construction begins at GMU park

Phase 1 of construction has started at the Greenville Downtown Airport (GMU) in South Carolina for a park, with a fund-raising party slated for Thursday, May 24. The grading is projected to be completed Wednesday. Next will be the irrigation, grassing and base work for the “runways” and exercise “taxiway,” airport officials report.

 

Will Big Oil revitalize a general aviation airport?

Revitalizing a dormant general aviation airport doesn’t happen every day, but a surge in oil industry activity in North Dakota has raised that hope in one community — and pilots can help make it happen, according to a report at AOPA.org. It notes that on May 7, the city commission of Killdeer, N.D., may consider a motion to form an airport authority that would preside over possible renewed operations at Weydahl Field (9Y1).

ONX wins $1 million state grant

The North Carolina Division of Aviation has awarded $1 million in State Aid to Airports program funds to Currituck County Regional Airport (ONX) in Maple to extend the airport’s taxiway and build a new apron to support the addition of the College of The Albemarle’s Currituck County Regional Aviation and Technical Training Center at the airport.

CXO slates open house

The Lone Star Executive Airport (CXO) in Conroe, Texas, will hold a public open house on Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Displays will include homebuilt and experimental aircraft, a U.S. Army Apache helicopter, World War II vintage aircraft, and more. Local pilots will be on hand with their aircraft to talk about aviation and flying.
