Beginning this week, the Reno Air Races — now dubbed the TravelNevada.com Reno National Championship Air Races — will return to northern Nevada for the 49th annual event. Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 12, planes will once again return to the Sierra skies in a world-class, week-long event featuring six classes of aircraft in a head-to-head competition culminating in a race for the Breitling Unlimited Championship trophy. WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Transportation Safety Board has determined that deteriorated locknut inserts found in Jimmy Leeward’s P-51D that crashed during the 2011 National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada, allowed the trim tab attachment screws to become loose, and even initiated fatigue cracking in one screw. This condition, which resulted in reduced stiffness in the elevator trim system, ultimately led to aerodynamic flutter at racing speed that broke the trim tab linkages, resulting in a loss of controllability and the eventual crash, NTSB officials said.

The Reno Air Races has a new name: TravelNevada.com Reno National Championship Air Races and Air Show Presented by Breitling. The change is a condition of the state’s Tourism Commission’s three-year, $600,000 title sponsorship to be paid out of surplus room tax revenues, according to a report at the Reno Gazette-Journal.
3D Entertainment Distribution has inked an agreement to present “Air Racers 3D,” in Reno exclusively at Cinemark Century Theatres from Sept. 7-20. The two-week theatrical engagement will coincide with the 2012 National Championship Air Races at Reno-Stead Airport, which will see the young star of the 3D film, pilot Steven Hinton, in competition for the fourth consecutive time.
