Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 690, located at Gwinnett County Airport in Lawrenceville, Georgia, hosts one of the Boeing B-17 bomber, “Aluminum Overcast,” on Oct. 1-4 visit to the Atlanta area.
The Atlanta stop is part of the EAA’s restored B-17 bomber’s “Salute Our Veterans” tour.
The public will be able to purchase flights and/or ground tours at Lawrenceville’s Briscoe Field. The aircraft will be at Landmark Aviation from Thursday, Oct. 1 through Sunday, Oct. 4. Pre-scheduled flights will take place 8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., with walk-through tours following. Tickets for B-17 flights can be purchased in advance by calling 800-359-6217 or by visiting B17.org.
“The national tour EAA undertakes each year has become the most popular ways to learn about this unique aircraft in an up-close way,” said Tom Poberezny, EAA president. “EAA is dedicated to preserving aviation’s magnificent heritage and our B-17 tours are a major part of that. We also take great pride in saluting all our nation’s veterans through this tour.”
Proceeds from the tours help keep the “Aluminum Overcast” flying and will assist the continuing restoration, maintenance and preservation efforts of the EAA. At every visit, those heroes who flew, manned and maintained these giants of history make themselves available on-site to comment and reflect on their involvement with these machines of the past.
Daily ground tours are $15 for a family, $5 for an adult, $3 for students, with no charge to accompanied children under 8 and World War II veterans. Special group rates can be arranged.
On Saturday, Oct. 3, an “all you care to eat” Pancake Breakfast begins at 8 a.m. in the EAA Sport Aviation Center at the field.
That evening, at 7:30 p.m., a World War II Aviation Talk (Round Table) Program and Low-Country Boil will be held in the EAA Chapter building. Aviators who flew during the period will be reminiscing in a moderated forum. Seating is limited and reservations are suggested. Tickets are $25/person in advance, $30 at the door with reservations.
