The City of Santa Monica, California, has selected Aeroplex Group Partners, a division of the Aeroplex/Aerolease Group, to provide interim management of Santa Monica Municipal Airport’s (SMO) self-serve fueling station starting April 16, 2017, following the scheduled departure of American Flyers, the tenant that has been maintaining the facility.
The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) joined with five other aviation stakeholders to file a motion March 6, 2017, before the U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit, requesting a stay against the FAA and an injunction against the city of Santa Monica, California, preventing any further actions to reduce the length of the runway and to curtail operations at Santa Monica Municipal Airport (SMO), while the court reviews an unprecedented settlement agreement between the FAA and the city. The latest salvo in the continuing battle by the city of Santa Monica to close the Santa Monica Municipal Airport (SMO) was fired by Atlantic Aviation, which owns the sole full-service FBO at the Southern California airport. According to Matt Thurber of Aviation International News, the FBO has filed a Part 16 complaint with the FAA in response to a resolution by the Santa Monica city council calling for the city to take over the airport’s two FBOs, which also include avgas provider American Flyers. In the complaint, Atlantic Aviation asked for expedited handling “given the nature of the violations herein alleged and the urgency with which corrective action is needed…”

On Nov. 4, a ballot initiative to give the Santa Monica City Council more control over operations at Santa Monica Municipal Airport (KSMO) in Southern California was approved by voters, signaling — for some — a death knell for the embattled airport.
Measure LC allows the City Council to manage the airport as it sees fit, including closing all or part of the 227-acre property. The measure, which passed with a 60% margin, mandates that the airport land be used only for parks, open space and recreational facilities until voters can approve land-use guidelines.
It had the backing of several community groups which have been trying to close the airport for years, citing safety concerns and calling the airport a playground for “rich hobbyist pilots.”
More than 15,500 signatures were filed with the Santa Monica City Clerk on June 10 in support of a charter amendment that would let voters decide the future of Santa Monica Municipal Airport. According to a report at AOPA.org, the “Santa Monica Voters Decide Initiative” collected approximately 6,000 more signatures than needed to win a place on the November ballot.
