NC awards grant to LHZ for expansion

By Janice Wood · February 12, 2012 ·

The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation recently awarded $400,000 in State Aid to Airports funds to Triangle North Executive Regional Airport (LHZ) in Louisburg for a terminal area expansion project. The funds will be used to acquire land for the expansion, which will include additional hangars and an aircraft parking apron.

“The land acquisition is the key initial step in allowing the airport to develop its terminal area,” said NCDOT Director of Aviation Richard Walls. “The airport can now move forward with planning additional development to enhance the facility.”

The State Aid to Airports Program is NCDOT’s basic airport aid program. This program provides funds for planning, acquiring, constructing or improving municipal, county and other publicly owned or controlled airports, and to authorize related programs of aviation safety, promotions and long-range planning. The division will be awarding multiple grants through the program to general aviation airports across the state for a variety of capital improvement projects, officials said.

Triangle North Executive Regional Airport has an approximate $12.9 million a year cumulative total impact on North Carolina and supports nearly 50 jobs, based on a 2006 statewide economic impact study.

Since Gov. Bev Perdue took office in 2009, the Division of Aviation has awarded more than $125 million in funding to state airports. These funds enable airports across the state to provide improvements that support economic development and job opportunities.
