Space to land…and land to space

By General Aviation News Staff · September 16, 2012 ·

By CHRIS MANNION and ED STORY, California Pilots Association

The California Pilots Association (CalPilots) invites all California pilots and aviation enthusiasts to its “Meet-Us In Mojave!” 2012 annual meeting, taking place Oct. 19-21 at the world-famous Mojave Air and Space Port. It’s an event you won’t want to miss.

If you’re a pilot, aviation enthusiast, or space enthusiast, you are invited. Whether you are a CalPilots member or not, our 2012 Mojave meeting will be a unique and memorable experience — a truly enjoyable weekend for all California pilots, aviation friends and aerospace enthusiasts.

CalPilots is a state-wide non-profit airport advocacy organization, whose volunteer members are dedicated toward the preservation California’s airports, protecting the rights of general aviation pilots, and promoting the interests of general aviation within the state. CalPilots plays a critical role as a statewide pilot organization, and one of the principle goals of the annual meeting is to highlight our progress on important airport advocacy issues in 2012, as well as promote participation and membership in CalPilots.

Historic Mojave Air and Spaceport is home to more than 60 companies engaged in flight development, highly advanced aerospace design, flight test and research. You’ll hear from the real “next generation” of space pioneers from such cutting-edge ventures as XCOR Aerospace, builders of the commercial reusable Lynx spacecraft, and Firestar Technologies, builders of advanced maneuvering rockets and power systems.

Other attractions at the event include:

  • A tour the Orbital Sciences “Stargazer” L-1011/100 Pegasus launch vehicle ;
  • A presentation by the only civilian test pilot school in the world — the National Test Pilot School (NTPS);
  • Sailplane flights in high-performance gliders with instructors from Southern California Soaring Academy;
  • The latest about Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in civilian airspace from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems; and
  • Details on the bold Perlan near-space 90,000 foot MSL glider flight.

Other activities include the Mojave Airport Plane Crazy Saturday fly-in and static displays; a CalPilots Meet-n-Greet Friday evening social; and Saturday dinner and fascinating evening discussion with aviation movers and shakers.

Join your fellow aviators for an exciting weekend full of camaraderie, exclusive tours, exciting demonstrations and riveting speakers.

Mention “CalPilots” for a special event rate at the Mariah Country Inn and Suites. Contact the Mariah Inn through their website, by telephone at 866-MARIAH1, or by email to Manager Kathy Benson at [email protected].

Registration: Member cost for the entire event is $35 per person and includes Saturday lunch and dinner. The special member rate is extended to a spouse or significant other. Non-member cost is $55 per attendee, which includes one year’s membership at a discounted rate of $20 (normally $35 per year).

Space is limited, so be sure to indicate your interest in attending by completing the Event Registration form on the CalPilots website. We will keep you updated by email with the schedule of events and other important information. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected].
