On Saturday, Sept. 27, students interested in aviation will get a special opportunity. For the first time the Southeast Aviation Expo will include educational sessions designed for kids 8 years old and over. For students, admission to the entire Expo and the sessions are free.
Courses include:
Sparks and Electricity Workshop for 8 – 18 year olds (PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED): 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.: Did you know there are three types of electricity? You will discover the different types, how they are used on a daily basis, and how they help an aircraft fly. Come see some of the many electrical aircraft components function using these different electrical sources. Taught by USAeroTech Institute instructors in their classroom and aircraft hangar.
Celebrate Freedom Foundation SOaR STEM Workshop for 8 – 18 year olds: 12:40 – 1:40 p.m.: Come see a full size $10 million AH-1F (MC) fully restored Bell Cobra Attack helicopter that flew in Vietnam, Bosnia, Grenada and Desert Storm to protect our nation. It will be opened up to reveal all of the cowlings, access panels and cockpit. Subject matter experts will talk about the various aspects of the helicopter including what it takes to keep it flying, its armament, jet engines, the Bernoulli’s Principle and Newton’s 3rd law. This program will encourage students to stay in school, learn STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) subjects and to consider educational and career opportunities in South Carolina’s growing aviation and aerospace industries.
Let’s Go Flying Workshop for 13 – 19 year olds (PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED): 1:50 – 3:30 pm: Ever wonder what keeps an aircraft flying and how it is controlled? This session will teach the basics of aerodynamics, flight controls, instruments and communications. The workshop concludes with a walk-around of several different aircraft including a Boeing 727. Taught by USAeroTech Institute instructors in their classroom and aircraft hangar.
“What kid wouldn’t like to learn about sparks and electricity, see a real combat helicopter or learn the magic behind flight?” stated Joe Frasher, Airport Director of the Greenville Downtown Airport. “This is a real world experience that I think they will never forget.”
Participants must arrive to the main SEAE registration area, located near the main terminal of the Greenville Downtown Airport at 100 Tower Drive, Greenville, SC 29607 at least 30 minutes before their session is scheduled to start.
