FAA issues STC for Chelton autopilot in Mooney aircraft

By General Aviation News Staff · April 22, 2005 ·

Chelton Aviation has received STC approval for installation of its digital AP-3C autopilot in Mooney models M20A-J. Follow-up approval is expected by the end of April for models K and above.

The Chelton AP-3C autopilot consists of three components that have been designed to eliminate adjustment and minimize maintenance issues. Since the Chelton autopilot maintains altitude holding through an attitude gyro instead of the traditional rate based deviation or averaging formula, it dampens the effect of turbulence, yielding a smoother ride.

The AP-3C is the first autopilot to offer Mooney owners and other general aviation aircraft vertical nav steering, or VNAV, when coupled with an EFIS, WAAS GPS or FMS, according to Chelton officials.

Price: $11,000, plus an STC installation kit. Attitude gyros, DG or HSI are extra.
