I was just reading GANews and it made me smile when I came across an ad for Iowa County Airport.
While en route to Oshkosh Airventure 2005 from Clinton, Iowa, the weather had taken a turn for the worse and I diverted to your airport. I fueled up, tied down and went inside. As I had figured, there sat other stranded aviators. Time to burn…I got together with a couple that had been weathered in since the night before (Lynn and Phil…what a fantastic find these two aviators were!) and they gave me a personal tour of the town. I had lunch at the Red Rooster Cafe and followed with a walking tour of Main Street. What a fantastic town! There was so much history there.
Although staying the night was looking like a very welcome option, that evening the weather had cleared and I proceeded on my way into OSH, arriving just before the Bonanzas.
Let me tell you, flying from Mineral Point to Oshkosh that evening was some of the most memorable flying I had done in quite some time. Very, very beautiful country — especially when flying above thin, widely scattered clouds that were remnants of the passing storm.
Aviation has introduced me to some of the nicest people and places anyone could ever wish for. Turns out that while this diversion held me back from my ultimate destination, it was a stop I will never forget!
