“Last Flight” shares intricacies and emotions of being a pilot

By General Aviation News Staff · January 6, 2006 ·

Ever wonder what would happen if the engine of a commercial jet airliner fails? What if the engine fails over the Atlantic Ocean?

Tom Chase, author and retired pilot, answers these questions and more in “Last Flight.”

Chase is a retired pilot who served 10 years in the Air Force, including duty in Vietnam, then flew for Trans World Airlines (TWA) for 25 years. He flew 18 different aircraft, including the F-100, C-130, B-767, and MD-80, during the 23,000 hours he logged before retiring in 1992.

Chase offers readers an authentic look inside the cockpit in his first novel. “Modern jetliners are electronically complicated flying machines,” he said. “But occasionally — rarely — things break.

“What happens when a sophisticated airliner is reduced to 1940’s technology?”
