The one with the most toys wins

By Janice Wood · July 7, 2006 ·

If big boy toys like airplanes, sports memorabilia and classic cars make your pulse quicken, you may want to be in Lubbock, Texas, July 15 when Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers auction off the assets of Jonathan D. “Jody” Nelson. Nelson pled guilty in April to embezzling more than $77 million from his employer. As he’s awaiting sentencing, his assets are being sold for restitution.

There are more than 1,100 items in the auction, including a Cessna 310, Cessna 182, Cessna 172 and a Hughes MD500E helicopter. Then there are the cars, ranging from a 1954 Corvette to a 2006 Mercedes-Benz S5S; sports memorabilia, including signed jerseys from Michael Jordan, Barry Bonds, Larry Bird and Wayne Gretzky; boats, antique furniture, and ranch equipment — truly something for everyone.

“In over 40 years of business, we’ve never seen such a vast array of unique items in one auction, let alone a Ritchie Bros. unreserved auction, where everything sells on auction day to the highest bidder, regardless of price,” said Nick Nicholson, senior vice president. “It truly is the ultimate ‘toy’ auction.”
