Could airpark have saved Meigs Field?

By General Aviation News Staff · August 4, 2006 ·

I was interested in Dave Sclair’s article on airparks in the June 23 issue of GANews (Under construction: Airparks as a way to save airports?) When Chicago’s Mayor Daley got his head caught in a wheel well during gear retraction and dug up Meigs Field, I can’t describe my anger and disgust. I had been using Meigs for over 50 years. It was ideally located to McCormick Place and downtown Chicago. I joined “Friends of Meigs” since I still visited near northside Chicago and it was way more convenient than Midway. I suggested to Friends of Meigs that if Daley wanted a park there, why not make Meigs an airpark. It could have been done even with the limited space available but it would have been better than tearing it up on the assumption it could be used for a terrorist base to bomb the Sears Tower.

I realize Dave is referring to having housing in conjunction with the airport, but if an airport is in jeopardy, perhaps designating it as an airpark may help save it. GANews is an excellent publication.
