Thunderbirds to perfrom at 2007 Gathering of Mustangs and Legends

By General Aviation News Staff · December 15, 2006 ·

The USAF Thunderbird team will perform at The Gathering of Mustangs and Legends — “The Final Round Up,” slated for next Sept. 27-30 in Columbus, Ohio.

The event, which will be held at Rickenbacker International Airport, will bring together more than 100 restored P-51 Mustangs. Of the more than 15,000 Mustangs produced, approximately 150 remain in flying condition today. The event also will honor 51 legends associated with the aircraft, such as World War II aces, Tuskeegee airmen, crew chiefs, WASPs and more.

“Seeing and hearing the aviation history that has evolved into the F-16s being flown by the Thunderbirds today will be a memorable element of the gathering,” said Lee Lauderback of Stallion 51 Corp. in Kissimmee, Fla., who is organizing the event.

The Thunderbirds comprise eight pilots and more than 100 support personnel. The team’s hour-long show combines formation and solo flying, mixing 40 exciting maneuvers.
