It was a decade ago that Composite Aeronautic Group of Spain was founded with one goal in mine: design and produce a Light Sport Aircraft that would bring together the simplicity and low cost of an LSA with the performance and utility of a more complex and expensive airplane.
The Toxo is the culmination of thousands of design hours by the engineering team at the company. Production of the airplane, which was first introduced at AirVenture 2003, will begin in the first quarter of this year. It will be certified as an S-LSA in the United States and a VLA in Europe.
Unlike many airplane manufacturers who struggle financially, CAG has some well-heeled partners, including the government of Aragon, Spain, Savia C.I, a venture capital group, and the Ace Group, a world leader in the automotive industry, as well as the aircraft’s designer. These partners ensure economic stability, according to company officials.
CAG recently opened a new manufacturing complex just outside Zaragoza, Spain. The state-of-the-art facility is part of the new aerospace center and includes a new runway for flight testing.
The Toxo sports a composite airframe constructed with a prepreg system that includes high strength-to-weight ratio honeycomb cores, carbon fiber reinforcement and an advanced modified epoxy resin developed for the aerospace industry. The elaborate construction method creates a high strength airframe with an impeccable finish inside and out.
The airplane is powered by a 100-hp Rotax 912 powerplant.
Avionics are far above basic and can be upgraded to an Op Technologies glass cockpit, which features Highway-In-The-Sky and advanced synthetic vision.
Another available upgrade is leather upholstery.
Standard on all Toxo aircraft is a four-point harness seatbelt system and a Ballistic Recovery System whole airplane parachute.
Base price for the Toxo is around $131,000 (U.S.) Add the Op Technologies EFIS and the leather seats and the price is $158,175.
The company has three distributors in the U.S.: Toxo Aircraft North America in Cincinnati, Ohio (800-917-6648, [email protected]), Toxo Aircraft USA in Glendale, Ariz. (623-695-9040, ToxoAircraftUSA.com) and IIS Aircraft Co. of Peachtree City, Georgia, (678-364-0363).
