Bonanzas get a power boost

By General Aviation News Staff · January 19, 2007 ·

A new STC that offers Bonanza pilots more punch for their IO-550 powered aircraft was recently awarded to Western Skyways. The turbonormalizing STC authorizes the facility to upgrade IO-550 powered aircraft to achieve increased performance. The company also can convert the IO-520 to an IO-550.

The system optimizes engine performance by compressing and regulating incoming ambient air pressure, according to Skyways officials, who claim the result is sea-level performance up to 18,000 feet. Shorter takeoff rolls, increased climb rates, and virtually no high-density takeoff issues are the hallmarks of the STCd process, which Western Skyways has been performing on the IO-520 powerplant for two years, officials added. Reduced air resistance at altitude also results in higher cruise airspeed, improved fuel efficiency and maximized engine operations.
