Re: Tom Norton’s article on Charles L. Lawrance, (Paul Revere’s horse: Charlie Lawrance and his engine that changed aviation, Jan. 19 issue), the name of Paul Revere’s horse was Brown Beauty.
I know this because I was once asked in my capacity as executive director of the Lexington, Mass., Historical Society. A gentleman from New Jersey was settling a bet with the retired chief of police of his small town (the wager was seven free breakfasts at a local diner). I found the answer in a book by Brandeis historian David Hackett Fisher, “Paul Revere’s Ride,” Oxford University Press, 1994, some of which he researched in our special library. I am currently director of the New Hampshire Aviation Museum, in Manchester, N.H. That’s how I came by your publication and the article.
