DONALD DOUGLAS WEIGHS IN ON THE GREATEST PLANE

By General Aviation News Staff · July 6, 2007 ·

I sure enjoyed the latest issue of General Aviation News, especially the article “The Greatest Aircraft Ever” (June 8 issue).

On a historical note, a few years before aircraft designer Donald Douglas died, I had located his address and wrote him a letter. In my letter, one of the questions I asked him, in addition to asking for his autograph, was which aircraft of his career gave him the most satisfaction as being his best?

About a month after I mailed the letter I received his response. He had taken my letter and answered my questions in the margin. He said his best and favorite was the DC-3, then he signed his name.

A nice keepsake from a great aviation giant.
