Florida airport gets new layer of scurity

By General Aviation News Staff · September 7, 2007 ·

A new layer of security has been added to Florida’s Punta Gorda Airport (PGD).

AFAB International Inc. recently completed installation of a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Access Control System at the airport. The system provides selected vehicles with hands-free access on and off airside operations, according to AFAB officials. Additionally, an electronic device inside the more than 300 planes based at PGD enables pilots to clear the airside gates to the hangar area without having to wait for airport personnel to open the gates for their planes.

The electronic device “reads” the locally based aircraft — at distances of more than 2,000 feet out and at speeds in excess of 200 mph — and logs the planes in and out of PGD automatically using a wireless ethernet network.
