NASA video reveals icing’s affect on tailplanes

By Janice Wood · February 17, 2009 ·

If you think you know a lot about the effects caused by ice on an airplane’s wings, click on the link below to watch a 23 minute video from NASA concerning tailplane stalls due to icing. You might be surprised as it reveals the differences between ice on wings and ice on tailplanes, tells how to recognize the latter, and how to recover. As it happens, the recovery procedure is the opposite of that from a wing stall. It is very valuable information. Pilots, please make note of the importance given to not engaging an autopilot during icing conditions.
