Lots of pilots will tell you their airplane is a mean machine.
Carl Brownd of Centennial, Colo., can show you.
A close-up inspection of the air intake on his RV-6 Rocket reveals a fierce, snarling creature.
“It’s a pretty mean engine and I decided to have some fun with the intake,” he said when we caught up with him at last year’s Copperstate Fly-In in Arizona. “It’s actually an air diverter and I got some decals and did it up.”
The Lycoming IO-540 is “fast and aggressive,” according to Brownd, noting the monster on the air intake compliments the red and gold flames down the side of the plane.
The artwork did not go unnoticed at Copperstate. Brownd’s airplane took home second place in the Custom Metal Kit division.
