American Legend introduces amphibious Cub

By Janice Wood · April 24, 2009 ·

American Legend Aircraft Company plans to offer an amphibious Legend FloatCub equipped with floats from Baumann Floats, LLC, of New Richmond, Wisconsin. The amphibious FloatCub will comply with light-sport requirements of 1,430 pounds maximum gross weight and a simple retractable landing gear, the company said on April 24.

American Legend has started taking $10,000 refundable deposits on the FloatCub, which falls under light-sport aircraft rules. The company expects certification and delivery of the first one in July. The amphibious FloatCub will be offered at $159,000.

The FloatCub is the seaplane certified version of Legend’s light-sport Legend Cub. It weighs less than comparable aircraft, costs less, and has the added advantage of doors on both sides of the cockpit, giving Legend Cub pilots and passengers access from either side of the aircraft.

American Legend completed and flew its first FloatCub, equipped with Baumann straight floats, in June of 2005. That version subsequently won the Best Float Fabric Seaplane Award at Sun ‘n Fun in 2006. The amphibious FloatCub will give American Legend customers the ability to change landing sites from water to land or land to water, commented Kurt Sehnert, general manager of American Legend.

“Our customers have been asking for this configuration for some time now,” Sehnert said. “The added flexibility of the amphibious FloatCub and our long-standing partnership with Baumann will allow us meet our customers’ needs with a reliable aircraft for exceptional recreational water flying.”
