The Flying Car makes its Sun ‘n Fun premiere

By Meg Godlewski · April 29, 2009 ·

Terrafugia1 Timing is everything, especially when you are introducing a new flying machine.

Anna Dietrich, chief operating officer of Terrafugia, the makers of the Transition, a roadable aircraft, note that interest in the so-called “flying car” is at an all-time high after a successful test flight a few weeks ago.

The actual flying prototype was on display at Sun ‘n Fun.

“We are very happy to be here,” she said, while her husband, Carl, who is the designer of the Transition, explained the wing-folding mechanism to a potential customer. The Transition sat in a cordoned-off display area that was almost always surrounded by people with cameras.

“They’ve been taking photos and videos,” she said. “The Transition draws a crowd and we’re happy to share it!”

But don’t get too close. A chain that separates the crowds from the Transition was put up as a precaution.

“Because it is a flying prototype, we have to be careful,” she said. “We don’t want someone accidentally pressing on something they shouldn’t press.”
