International visitors flock to Sun ‘n Fun

By Janice Wood · May 11, 2009 ·

The International Visitors Tent at Sun ‘n Fun did box office business this year.

As of the fourth morning of the fly-in, the tent had welcomed more than 1,100 visitors from 56 countries, including Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Iran, Kenya and even Botswana.

“It’s been much better this year than last,” confirmed Michele Van Horn, chairman. “For example, last year we had a total of 233 visitors from Brazil during the whole show. After three days this year, it was 333.”

Last year’s total after three days was 888 visitors, compared to 1,101 visitors so far this year.

Van Horn credits the tent’s new location, which is right next to the Main Registration area.

“This is the perfect location,” she said. “The visitors come in and see our board and they get excited.”

The tent is staffed with 30 volunteers who speak a world of languages. Many of the volunteers are from other countries, including Japan, Germany, and England. Portugese and Spanish are the most requested languages, she noted.
