Aerox oxygen mask receives industry’s only TSO

By Janice Wood · May 14, 2009 ·

The FAA has issued Aerox a TSO for its medium altitude oxygen mask.

aeroxAerox is the only manufacturer to produce and hold a TSO for this type of mask, which is certified for use up to 25,000 feet, according to company officials. This mask can be used as a direct replacement for any mask certified to 25,000 feet.

An FAA TSO (Technical Standard Order) is a minimum performance standard for specified materials, parts, and appliances used on civil aircraft. When authorized to manufacture a material, part, or appliances to a TSO standard, this is referred to as TSO authorization. Obtaining this approval and certification requires a rigorous testing process to ensure the product or part complies with both the FAA and SAE standards, Aerox officials note.

To achieve the TSO, Aerox had to perform numerous testing procedures, such as flame resistance, anti-fungal, and corrosion. A Fit Leak Test was performed on 88 people, varying in ages from 5 to 75. These tests and others were performed by Aerox, as well as independent laboratories.
