In case you didn’t know, Lyons Studio had a “Name the Painting” contest at Sun ‘n Fun in April. People visiting the booth could submit up to three suggestions for artist Sam Lyons’ newest painting, which was finished just days before the event. Sam and Mindy Lyons then chose from hundreds of entries. “It was a tough decision,” said Mindy Lyons, “especially since a man and woman had to agree.”
“J3 Morning” won “after some spirited debates,” the Lyons couple said on May 16. Weldon Wainright of Vero Beach, Fla., submitted the winning name and was awarded a limited edition print of the painting.
Wainright works for Piper, so “it’s especially fitting that he won,” Sam Lyons commented. Wainright currently is the Lead Certification Engineer for Powerplant and Mechanical Systems at Piper Aircraft.
“Big thanks to everyone who gave us suggestions,” Mindy Lyons said. “There were many excellent ideas and, who knows? We may end up using one of those names for another painting. We were grateful that the contest generated a lot of interest and excitement.”
Other favorites included “Cub Fly with Me,” “Cub Dreams,” “J3 Sunrise,” “Lockhaven Gold,” and “Nose Art,” and the most frequently submitted name was “Ole Yeller.” The funniest title was “Does This Prop Make My Tail Look Big?” the Lyons’ said. “That last one was obviously written by a married man,” according to Mindy Lyons.
