Long-time CFI dies, life to be celebrated at Mulino Fly-In

By Janice Wood · July 6, 2009 ·

Long-time CFI Carl Payson Dietz died June 22 in Oregon City, Ore.

Dietz earned his private license in 1947 at the Scappoose Airport. After suffering a serious accident in the mid-1950s in the logging industry, he became a flight instructor and commercial pilot at the Hillsboro Airport. In 1964, he became the fixed base operator at the Mulino Airport. He was at the airport for more than 20 years until the airport was taken over by the Port of Portland.

He instructed more than 500 students, including many who went on to become airline or corporate aviation pilots. He was an active pilot well into his 89th year.

Payson’s life and accomplishments will be honored July 18-19 at the Mulino Fly-In at the Mulino Airport.
