‘Sky Jeep’ takes off

By Janice Wood · August 7, 2009 ·

Zenith Aircraft Co. has partnered with JabiruUSA to offer the STOL CH 701 aircraft kit bundled with the complete firewall-forward installation for the Jabiru 2200 aircraft engine.

STOL CH 701 air-to-airPriced under $30,000, the Zenith STOL CH 701 kit with Jabiru 2200 engine package includes the all-metal STOL CH 701 kit (airframe and finishing kits), the 85-hp direct-drive, air-cooled Jabiru 2200 aircraft engine, the complete firewall-forward package for the engine installation (including cowl, engine mount, exhaust and propeller), and basic instruments. The kit comes with factory-riveted wing spars, CNC cut and drilled skins, factory welded fuel tanks, gear with hydraulic disk brakes, assembly hardware, and more.

“In today’s uncertain economy, many kit builders want to know how much their kit aircraft project will cost before they start building,” explained Sebastien Heintz, Zenith Aircraft’s president.

First introduced in 1986, the two-seat all-metal design from aeronautical engineer Chris Heintz has become one of the most popular light kit aircraft designs in existence, with an estimated 1,000 completed and flying around the world. The high wing design combines the features and advantages of a “real” airplane with the short-field capabilities of an “ultralight” aircraft, company officials note.

The light sport utility STOL CH 701 is a boxy “sky jeep” designed to be easy to build and maintain, with features such as fixed leading-edge wing slats, full length flaperons, and large tail control surfaces for slow flight and STOL capabilities. The aircraft is equipped with a tricycle landing gear for off-airport operations. Since the design meets the definition of an LSA it can be operated with the Sport Pilot certificate.
