Master Instructors LLC and its board of review have accredited several CFIs as Master Instructors.
Of the approximately 93,000 CFIs in the United States, fewer than 700 of them have earned Master accreditation, according to Master Instructors officials. The FAA has approved the accreditation as an alternate means for CFIs to renew their flight instructor certificates.

Michael “Mike” Berlin, of West Hartford, Conn., a six-time Master CFI, was recently granted Master Instructor Emeritus status. He is a flight and ground instructor with Premier Flight Center at Hartford-Brainard Airport (HFD) as well as a FAASTeam representative in the FAA’s Windsor Locks FSDO area.
Theodore Corsones recently earned his initial Master CFI accreditation. A resident of Naples, Fla., and Rutland, Vt., he is an independent flight and ground instructor teaching with the Mooney Aircraft Pilots Association (MAPA) Safety Foundation. He also serves as a board member, treasurer, and chief operating officer for MAPA’s Safety Foundation.
Gordon A Ewald, a four-time Master, recently renewed his Master CFI accreditation. The Hardy, Va., resident is the assistant chief CFI with Falwell Aviation, a Lynchburg Part 141 flight school with a satellite campus at Roanoke Regional Airport (ROA). He is also an independent flight and ground instructor who serves as a volunteer Angel Flight pilot.
Arthur Hayssen, a six-time Master CFI, was recently granted Master Instructor Emeritus status. The Sebastopol, Calif., resident is the owner of North Coast Air and director of aviation technology at Santa Rosa Junior College. He is also a FAASTeam representative in the FAA’s Oakland FSDO area.
Paul Jurgens, a two-time double Master, recently renewed his Master Ground Instructor (MGI) accreditation. The Williamsburg, Ohio, resident is the chief flight instructor for glider and multiengine training at Sporty’s Academy and Eastern Cincinnati Aviation at Clermont County Airport (I69). In addition, he is the vice president of publishing for Sporty’s Pilot Shop specializing in product development.
Bernard King, a five-time Master, recently renewed his Master CFI accreditation. The Salina, Kan., resident is an associate professor of aviation at Kansas State University-Salina and the program lead for K-State’s Professional Pilot Program. A retired US Army aviator, he also served as the Civil Air Patrol’s Kansas Wing commander and is currently the Wing’s finance officer.
J Robert Moss, a three-time Master, recently renewed his Master CFI accreditation. The Los Angeles resident is an independent flight instructor, a mentor pilot, and the president of Flying Like the Pros at Van Nuys Airport (VNY). He also serves as a FAASTeam representative in the FAA’s Van Nuys FSDO area.
