LZU may be privatized, setting stage for airlines

By Janice Wood · January 20, 2010 ·

Gwinnett County Airport-Briscoe Field (LZU), Georgia’s fifth-busiest airport, may be privatized, setting the stage for commercial airline service at the GA airport, according to a story in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

A measure to privatize the airport was passed unanimously by the Gwinnett County Commission Jan. 19, but before privatization occurs, the county plans to study financial and environmental impacts and gather as much public sentiment as possible, according to Commission Chairman Charles Bannister, who is quoted in the story:

“We have had a number of misunderstandings about [airport privatization]. We do not know whether privatization or commercialization of Briscoe airport is in the best interests of Gwinnett County. However, we have enough information to think studying the concept is the right thing to do.”
