Boris Popov, founder of BRS Aerospace, which manufactures whole-airplane emergency parachute systems, has been awarded the Sperry Award for 2009.
The Sperry Award, instituted in 1955, is given in recognition of a distinguished engineering contribution that has advanced the art of transportation, whether by land, sea, or space. Previous award winners include: Donald Douglas for the development of the DC-3, Ferdinand Porsche for the Volkswagen automobile, the Boeing Co. for the 707 passenger jet, and the Bosch Co. for the development of anti-lock brakes.
“All of us who are associated with the creation, development, and ongoing efforts at BRS are certainly deeply honored to be the recipient of such a highly esteemed and historic award. To be included amongst luminaries of such exceptional engineering success is indeed humbling,” stated Popov.
