M-Drive Starter PMA’d for TCM engines

By Janice Wood · March 25, 2010 ·

Kelly Aerospace Energy Systems has received FAA/PMA approval for its new M-Drive Starter, designed specifically for TCM engines equipped with TCM Starter Adapters.

In recent years operators have experienced premature wear on TCM Starter Adapter springs and drive shafts due to starters that would not fully release the drive wrap spring from the starter adapter drive shaft after the start, according to Kelly officials, who note this wear experience resulted in numerous expensive starter adapter overhauls.

The M-Drive solves this issue by incorporating an in-line solenoid within the motor housing which disengages the starter motor from the starter adapter after engine start and release of the ignition switch, company officials explained. The M-Drive, weighing in at just 7.5 lbs., is interchangeable with the legacy Kelly Aerospace Energizer and all other units approved on TCM applications. M-Drives are available in both 12 volt and 24 volt configurations.

“The M-Drive will continue the legacy we started over 20 years ago with the Energizer starter,” commented Jeff Kelly, president, “…and since we understand the starter system we met our goal of unmatched performance and durability at a lighter weight which allows us to continue to offer the best TCM starter on the market.”
