American Legend Aircraft Co. has introduced its Classic J3, which is based on the Legend Cub, incorporating numerous safety improving and “slimming” features, according to company officials. It will be S-LSA certified and priced at $94,895 ready to fly.
The new Classic J3 by American Legend is configured with a single clamshell door/window combination for right-hand entry and exit, similar to the Piper J3. Plus, it will feature a sliding window on the left hand side, much like the Piper Super Cub. The Classic J3 is available in a single configuration, with numerous standard features, including: a 100-horsepower Continental O-200 engine, Sensenich wood propeller, all-metal cowling with exposed cylinders, 25-hour+ battery with starter, 16-gallon fuel system, disk brakes, die-spring gear, shoulder harnesses at both seats, and more. Additionally, the instrument panel will closely resemble that of the Piper J3. Engine instruments include oil pressure/temperature and tachometer, while flight instruments include altimeter, airspeed, and inclinometer. The Classic J3 retains the Legend Cub’s 3-inch wider cabin, aft bench seat, and large baggage compartment.
“The new Classic J3 sprung from many conversations with current Legend Cub owners,” said Darin Hart, the company’s owner. “They have repeatedly told us why they chose the Legend Cub. It offered a truly modern aircraft that had the same flying characteristics of the classic Piper. They also convinced us that there are additional buyers out these who would jump on the opportunity for a slimmed-down, brand new Cub.”
The Classic J3 will be available in a color choice of yellow with black lightning bolt, or white with red or blue striping. A brief list of available options includes a radio installation, a choice of battery charging systems, air/oil separator, oil quick-drain, chrome valve covers, and a brass leading edge propeller.
