FliteNet deployed

By Janice Wood · May 6, 2010 ·

DAC International Inc. of Greenwich AeroGroup has deployed an “in flight” BlackBerry WiFi connectivity system called FliteNet. The system interfaces with aircraft equipped with Iridium or Magnastar telephone systems.

FliteNet was designed to accommodate Wifi connectivity without having to mount components in an aircraft. It is a carry-on system with MagnaStar or Iridium compatible software capable of retrieving and broadcasting e-mails to multiple BlackBerry devices via WiFi. It essentially provides ground Blackberry e-mail functionality above 10,000 feet, company officials said.

Plans are underway to add the iPhone to the capabilities of the system and other smartphones as justified by customer demand, company officials note. iPhone functionality with MagnaStar interface will be offered as an upgrade to the current system through a software update, which is scheduled for third quarter 2010.

The FliteNet system for BlackBerry on Magnastar or Iridium is currently priced at $12,995.
