Tour historic Flabob Airport

By Janice Wood · May 16, 2010 ·

Flabob Airport (RIR) in Riverside, Calif., now offers breakfast and a tour of the airport every third Saturday of the month (except December) from 8 a.m. to 11.m.

The $5 breakfast, which includes eggs, meats, coffee and pancakes,  is served in the EAA Chapter One hangar. High school students, many from the Wathen Aviation High School, act as docents, providing tours of the airport facilities. The tours include visits to Tom Wathen’s hangar, which features four Thompson Trophy Race replicas, the DeHavilland Comet (pictured), Firecracker, Pesco Special and the Caudron 460. This marks the first time the racers have been put on public display as a group.

Students also will be showing off the two restoration projects their peers are pursuing: A Stinson 108 and a Stits Skycoupe. There will be tours of the Wathen High School facilities and Wright Flyer restoration, which is expected to become a flyable aircraft. Visitors will also be able to tour the interior and cockpit the Flabob Express DC-3. The monthly event and its location will also work as a gathering point for hot rods and antique/classic cars.

The only charge will be for the breakfast and that is not a requirement for touring the airport. For more  information: 951-683-2309, extension 103, or Flabob.org
