Runway Cafe at GMU prepares for takeoff

By Janice Wood · June 14, 2010 ·

The Runway Cafe at Greenville Downtown Airport (GMU) is set to open this summer.

According to owner Mike Bliss, the cafe’s soups and specials will utilize seasonal produce bought locally and the daily specials will have at least one serving of fruits and/or vegetables. Bliss, who is a Clemson graduate, has been in the food and beverage industry for more than 16 years.

“The aviation themed venue will be family friendly, affordable, serve beer and wine, feature a main dining area, outside seating, rooms for private groups and a large hangar for special events,” said Lara Kaufmann, public relations director for GMU. “Beside the restaurant is some land where a free public park is planned.”

GMU is the busiest general aviation airport in South Carolina and is a self-sufficient entity with financial strength that doesn’t rely on local taxpayers for funding. The airport is home to more than 25 aviation-related businesses creating 453 jobs that annually contribute more than $35.2 million to the Upstate economy.
