American Air Campers Association (AACA) Founder and President Don Abbott presented the first AACA “Award of Excellence” to the Poberezny family and Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) at AirVenture 2010.
EAA President and CEO Tom Poberezny accepted the award that recognizes the Poberezny family’s long-standing efforts to encourage family togetherness through aviation. Abbott notes, “Contributions made by EAA and the Pobereznys to the field of sport aviation and youth education have been limitless. EAA Founders Paul and Audrey Poberezny are shining examples of dedication to family and country.”
The AACA is designed for pilots and families with a passion for flying and camping. Abbott, a long-time pilot and air camper notes that, “AACA is the fulfillment of a life-long dream of developing an organization devoted to discovering new horizons, meeting new friends and having limitless fun along the way. In addition, AACA will work in harmony with EAA, AOPA and other organizations that mirror our goal to promote, protect and preserve the combined freedoms of flying and camping in America.”
Abbott’s love for air camping started when his daughter Liz was 6 years old. They would fly a two-place Cessna to a grass landing strip in the middle of an Indiana state park, pitch a tent and go hiking. “The combination of camping and flying is the ultimate experience of American freedom,” he says. “I hope AACA will make more people aware of the benefits of air camping and encourage them to learn to fly and enjoy this great sport.”
AACA founding memberships are available for $49 at AmericanAirCampers.com, and include a commemorative gift pack; access to AACA’s on-line Airport Camp Guide & Flight Planner; Web Camp Store offering gear specifically suited for air camping; VIP priority at AACA sponsored events; members’ blog, and the opportunity to participate in AACA’s regional air camping adventures and annual Air Camping Jamborees.
