By Janice Wood · August 23, 2010 ·

The fourth annual Girls With Wings scholarship application deadline is Aug. 31. Applicants must submit an essay with photo stating why she believes she is a role model for Girl With Wings.Girls With Wings will select two $1,000 recipients from applicants who have soloed but not yet received their private pilot certificates. Recipients will be notified Oct. 1.

Girls With Wings, Inc., is a nonprofit organization that introduces young girls to their role models in aviation-related occupations. Website activities and inspirational stories of women involved in various fields of aviation motivate girls to pursue their own skyward adventures, according to organizers. Fundraising for outreach activities is done through the sales of Girls With Wings merchandise designed to let everyone know “Yes, Girls Can Fly!” The scholarships are funded primarily through private donations.
