Air Plains Services partners with Petersen Aviation

By Janice Wood · December 19, 2010 ·

Air Plains Services will partner with Petersen Aviation Inc. on an  Anti-Detonation Injection System (ADI), which will allow GA aircraft to use autofuel.

In the early 1990s Petersen Aviation, based in Minden, Nebraska, certified ADI systems on Cessna 188s, 210s and Barons, which allowed operation of these aircraft using 91 octane autofuel when the anti-detonation injection system is installed.

With the rising concern on the elimination of avgas, the two companies are combining resources to rediscover the answer that general aviation has been waiting for, said officials with Wellington, Kansas-based Air Plains Services.

Petersen’s ADI System was developed to allow high compression engines to run on low octane fuels safely. Air Plains Services intends to develop additional Supplemental Type Certificate for ADI which will enable the installation of the system components on aircraft and provide the operator with more fuel choices.

Anti-Detonant Injection, also know as Water Injection, is not a new technology or invention. As a matter of fact, it has been used in aircraft prior to World War II, company officials said. During the war water injection was used to prevent detonation while developing significant additional power. ADI can also be used to develop rated power on a lower octane fuel.

You had better start lobbying to keep ethanol out of Mogas. We have been told by our supplier that 93 Octane Mogas without ethanol will not be available in three months. We have been unable to locate any other suppliers as of this date.
