On Jan. 14 at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Seattle author Don Ulmer will present a true story of love and war based upon his novella, “Where or When.” The presentation, “Voices of the Great War,” looks at the bittersweet tale about World War I aviator 1st Lt. Malcom Gunn and his childhood sweetheart Marge Van Sciver. The young couple was married only a week before Malcom was shipped to Europe to fight in the war.
“Voices of the Great War” presents the Gunns’ journals, letters and photos, while Ulmer spices his talk with film clips of the Seattle choral group Alpha Singers’ renditions of World War I songs. The program is at 2 p.m. and is free with admission to the museum. Ulmer will sign his books following the presentation.
Don Ulmer is a veteran with 32 years of service in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service. In addition to “Where and When,” Ulmer has published three novels centering on submarine action during the Cold War, “Shadows of Heroes,” The Cold war beneath’ and “Silent Battleground.” A fourth, “Ensure Deniable Plausibility,” is scheduled for release in January. He is a docent at The Museum of Flight.
