Washington State airport land-use planning guide updated

By Janice Wood · February 2, 2011 ·

Now available is Washington State’s updated Airport and Compatible Land-Use Program Guidebook.

The updated guidebook does not change land-use requirements for towns, cities and counties, according to state officials. Instead, it incorporates new, interactive tools and resources for navigating through the sometimes challenging airport land-use-planning process.

The guidebook includes new features such as:

  • Graphics and visual aids to communicate land-use practices.
  • A six-step planning process to encourage informed decision-making.
  • Checklists, worksheets and a tool kit to assist in compatibility planning.

Effective and proactive land-use planning is critical for protecting airports and communities against incompatible development, state officials note, adding the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Aviation program provides technical assistance to airports and local decision-makers to encourage informed and practical land-use-compatibility choices.
