The new issue of FAA Safety Briefing supports the safety outreach efforts the FAA Safety Team (FAASTeam) is doing with its 2nd Annual Safety Standdown. The main Standdown event is April 2 in Lakeland, Fla., in conjunction with the 2011 Sun ’n Fun International Fly-In and Expo, while FAASTeam members around the country are holding more than 90 local Standdown events.
The articles in the March/April 2011 FAA Safety Briefing complement the four Standdown themes: Positive Flight Attitude, Going Beyond Preflight, En Route Cruise, and Maneuvering Flight. Data shows that lack of attention and training in these areas has led to a large number of general aviation accidents, according to FAA officials. In this issue, you will find articles on each of these critical areas where training and focus can improve general aviation safety.
The Safety Standdown website went live today and includes a message from Administrator Randy Babbitt, links to content in the four theme areas, and a map that users can click on to find Standdown events in their local areas.
On April 2, the Standdown website will be updated to include several new videos that complement the four themes. The other sections on the site — FAA Safety Briefing and News & Updates — will be updated frequently to provide safety news and links to safety information.
FAA Safety Briefing is the safety policy voice for the non-commercial general aviation community. The magazine’s objective is to improve safety by:
- making the community aware of FAA resources
- helping readers understand safety and regulatory issues, and
- encouraging continued training
