World’s largest air show team to perform at Sun ‘n Fun

By Janice Wood · March 10, 2011 ·

Team RV, the world’s largest air show team, will fill the sky at Sun ‘n Fun with 11 homebuilt aircraft in a display of close formation, formation aerobatics, and difficult rejoins on March 30.

“At Sun ‘n Fun, pilots from all over the world converge to kick off the flying season, and Team RV intends to wow them with an action-packed performance unlike any other in the industry,” said Mike “Kahuna” Stewart, Team RV Founder and Flight Lead. At times, the multiple airplanes will be all over the aerobatic box flying formation shapes or close trail and aerobatics simultaneously, he said.

According to Stewart, achieving excellence in large formation flying is no easy task. “Our routine requires intense concentration and situational awareness, highly developed stick and rudder skills, and complete trust in fellow wingmen. We are successful only as a result of the passion and dedication of all team pilots,” he said.

The group of ex-military, commercial, and civilian pilots who live throughout the southeast fly their RV-8s, RV-7s, and RV-6s in air shows mainly in the eastern US. This is the first performance at Sun ‘n Fun for the team since it expanded in size and incorporated aerobatics into its routine in the past two years. Team RV launches a minimum of 10 aircraft and up to 13 for its air show routine.
