Ice Skates redux

By Janice Wood · March 29, 2011 ·

LoPresti Aviation never does anything in a small way. That’s why the company is introducing six products during SUN ’n FUN — one for every day. Tuesday’s is an upgrade from a product introduced last year: Ice Skates 2, wheelpants for Cirrus aircraft.

The Ice Skates were designed in response the a problem with the original brakes on Cirrus’ overheating, which would cause the wheelpants to catch on fire. The Ice Skates 2 are made of a fireproof material, bromide, which will not catch fire even if the the brake fluid catches fire, said Rj Siegel, president.

The wheelpants also boast a NACA scoop that sends cooling air through the wheelpant into the brakes, with an exhaust opening at the back for the hot air. The second version also has been reshaped for lower drag, which means an additional 1.5 to 2 knots.

“The feature on these that everybody likes is the doors,” Siegel said, “so we made the door a lot bigger.”

The wheelpants also feature quarter-turn fasteners rather than screws, which means that it takes just five minutes to remove the wheelpant, not 45, according to Siegel.

Ice Skates 2 are available now for $7,495. For more information: LoPrestiAviation.com
