Reader Jeff Lyons took us to task — rightly — for our repost of an EAA story that said the “Liberty Bell” crashed. The B-17 made an emergency landing and all seven crew members and volunteers walked away without serious injury. According to a story in the Chicago Tribune, the bomber burned in a cornfield southeast of Aurora Municipal Airport on Monday, June 13. The B-17 took off from the airport at 9:30 a.m. and made an emergency landing in a cornfield near Highway 71 and Minkler Road in Oswego after the pilot reported an engine fire. The Tribune story has an amazing photo gallery of the aftermath of the fire and emergency landing.
