‘Flying Wild Alaska’ star promotes GA careers

By Janice Wood · October 23, 2011 ·

Discovery Communications has unveiled new content on its DiscoverYourSkills.com website highlighting career opportunities in general aviation featuring Ariel Tweto of Discovery Channel’s “Flying Wild Alaska.”

Ariel Tweto

The initiative is part of the “Discover Your Skills” job initiative, a multimedia public affairs campaign designed to provide unemployed and underemployed Americans with access to critical resources for obtaining marketable job skills and expertise. Tweto, whose family operates a company that delivers critical supplies to remote parts of Alaska, stars in a Public Service Announcement (PSA) about the general aviation industry.

Tweto and Clark Bunting, President and General Manager of Discovery Channel, announced the new content at a reception last week for the bipartisan Congressional General Aviation Caucus to recognize the important role the general aviation industry plays in supporting the nation’s economy, creating jobs and providing crucial access to the country’s remote areas. Congressional General Aviation Caucus Co-Chair, Sen. Mark Begich of Alaska, was a special guest at the event.

“In Alaska, general aviation is a critical industry that links our communities and pumps over $400 million a year into our state’s economy. For Alaskans, aviation is a necessity, not a luxury and is truly the lifeblood of our state,” said Sen. Begich. “I commend Discovery Communications’ for its efforts to raise awareness of this critical industry and its positive impact on job creation through its ‘Discover Your Skills’ initiative.”

“Discovery is proud to support Sen. Begich and the Congressional General Aviation Caucus in putting a spotlight on the importance of general aviation to our nation’s economy and transportation system,” said David Zaslav, President and CEO of Discovery Communications. “Through ‘Discover Your Skills,’ Discovery hopes to raise awareness of the critical need to train skilled workers to fill jobs in aviation and other industries, and to help those seeking work gain access to the training and skills required to obtain these in-demand positions.”

As part of “Discover Your Skills,” Tweto, along with other Discovery networks’ personalities, are participating in on- and off-air programs and events to raise awareness of career opportunities and highlight the importance of training workers to fill critical jobs in aviation, manufacturing, health care, energy, technology, construction and other industries. The website provides links and information to help educate, prepare and advance entry to the workforce.

Talent featured in the PSAs include Mike Rowe from DIRTY JOBS WITH MIKE ROWE, Bear Grylls from MAN VS. WILD, Keith Colburn from DEADLIEST CATCH, and Paul Teutul Sr. from AMERICAN CHOPPER on Discovery Channel; Buddy Valastro from CAKE BOSS, Katherine Kallinis and Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne from DC CUPCAKES, and Lori Allen from SAY YES TO THE DRESS: ATLANTA on TLC, and Jeannette Torres from Discovery Familia.

Additionally, as part of the initiative, Discovery Education will introduce a community college service for the 2012-2013 academic year designed to provide curriculum-based content to support post-secondary institutions and prepare students with the skills necessary to compete in today’s job market, according to company officials.

I couldn’t think of a better face to promote aviation. The whole Tweeto family has such a great set of values, especially in such an inhospitable climate.
