Aviation Nation returns to Nellis AFB

By Janice Wood · October 31, 2011 ·

Aviation Nation, the annual Open House and largest free public event in Nevada, returns Nov. 12-13 to Nellis Air Force Base.

Aviation Nation celebrates 70 years of airpower in Las Vegas and the Air Force’s accomplishments in air, space and cyberspace. Several military air demonstration teams, including the U.S. Air Force Aerial Demonstration Squadron, better known as the Thunderbirds, will perform with other military and civilian acts.

The two-day event will depict the history of American aviation and will salute the recent accomplishments of America’s military in operations around the globe through numerous military and civilian ground displays. Over 100 aircraft, covering the earliest days of aviation to some of the nation’s newest military aircraft, are scheduled to be on display.

Historical displays, community exhibits and a Kids’ Zone will also be included in the event. Food, beverages and novelties will be available for purchase.

General admission and public parking at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway is free. Free round-trip shuttle bus transportation between the Speedway and Nellis will be available. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway will have a designated handicapped parking area and handicapped-accessible shuttle buses.

Due to security, the only access route to the show for the general public will be via the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The general public must process through the security lines and ride buses to and from Nellis. The general public will not be allowed to walk onto Nellis Air Force Base to attend Aviation Nation.

The following list of banned items will be confiscated, or cause attendees to be turned away at the gate if brought to Aviation Nation.

  • Coolers, grills, glass containers, Large lawn chairs
  • Weapons, illegal drugs, fireworks, scanners, laser pointers, fixed blade knives and folding knives longer than 3 inches
  • Pets (exception: service animals)
  • Excessively large storage items and bags (exceptions: diaper bags, small purses and small camera bags)
  • Bicycles, scooters, skateboards, rollerblades/skates
