5th Annual Wings & Wheels Fly-In Saturday

By Janice Wood · November 3, 2011 ·

The Friends of Deridder Army Air Base (DAAB) will host their Annual Wings & Wheels Fly-In/Drive-In Saturday, Nov. 5. The event will take place at the former World War II DeRidder Army Air Base, now known as the Beauregard Parish Regional Airport (DRI), in DeRidder, La.

Warbird and vintage aircraft on display will include a 40N War Hawk, P-51 Mustang, F4U Corsair, 0-1 Bird P-Dog, and PT-17 Stearman.

A Fly-in/Drive-in Breakfast is scheduled from 7 am to 10 am with lunch vendor sales 10 am to 3 pm.

A Wings & Wheels Poker Run with a $25 registration open from 7 am to 10 will run til noon.

At 1 pm, P-40N Pilot John Fallis will present his DVD program, “The resurrection of the P-40N Warhawk.” This program depicts 10 years of dedication. The P-40N (pictured) was used extensively in the World War II fighter training at DAAB.

An in-depth “Introduction to Aviation” is being offered in the Aviation Resource Lab. Aviation enthusiasts, young and old alike, will be able to learn just what’s behind that dreamed-of first flight. Local volunteer pilots and Air Traffic Controllers from Fort Polk ATC will walk participants through a series of hands-on demonstrations, including flight planning, weather briefing, navigation and aircraft preflight. Participants will also have the opportunity to control the skies with an Air Traffic Control experience via a NASA Smart Skies simulation and to “log” flight time in a flight simulator. Upon completion of this Intro to Aviation, information about future aviation projects/programs will be made available.

Many great items, including three airplane rides, have been donated to the Silent Auction Fund Raiser.

This is also the last of the Louisiana Fly-in Series for this year.
